Chinese To Transform Phone Booths In To WiFi Hotspots

It seems as though local telecommunication companies in China have been losing money on phone booths located in cities nationwide. They’ve come up with a pretty awesome solution that benefits everyone. Instead of just demolishing the phone booths, they will instead transform them in to WiFi hotspots for public use. These “WiFi Kiosks” will essentially turn major Chinese cities in to giant hotspots, and will help these companies compete with 3G service providers. No word on how much this may end up saving the average user, but there’s a good chance that the companies which run the WiFi Kiosks will try to undercut 3G providers prices. Cheaper internet is always a good thing, WOOT!

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s Founder/CEO and Time Magazine’s newly crowned Person of the Year has just been spotted at the head offices of Baidu in Beijing, China. Robin Li (founder of Baidu) gave Mark and his girlfriend Priscilla Chan a tour of the building, where these photos were snapped. The social networking pioneer has spoken a few times this year about formulating plans to bring the world’s most popular social networking site to the the country with the world’s largest population of online users. Shanzhai iPhone 5 Beats Steve Jobs To The Punch (Video!)

Shanzhai manufacturers have officially gone above and beyond the call of duty with their latest knock-off. Some how they’ve been able to release an iPhone 5 clone before Steve Jobs — aka the Sith Lord Darth Jobs — has had a chance to have his big day on stage. We told you before that the Chinese were becoming more efficient at releasing clones of popular products, but this is just scary.

China To Surpass Japan In Research & Development Spending

China hasn’t always been the most “innovative” when it comes to tech, but according to the people smarter than I at Battelle R&D Magazine they’re throwing some serious money at the issue. R&D Magazine has projected that China will overtake Japan on the list of countries with the largest Gross Domestic Expenditures on R&D (GERD), with a whopping 153.7 MILLION BILLION US DOLLARS. This puts China second only to the US in R&D, but unfortunately it seems that most of the funds are set aside to develop manufacturing technology. As if they need more factories…

Winter Wednesdays — USB Powered Heated Mug

It’s starting to get significantly colder in certain parts of the world, and that means staying warm is becoming a daily priority. For the Chinese, one of the best ways to go about doing this is with a massive thermos of tea, a bit of hot pot, or some roasted sweet potatoes — my personal favorite. Unfortunately not all of these cold remedies are readily available to everyone…suckers. We’ve found a sweet solution for those looking to warm up in the office. This neat little gadget will heat your drink up to a balmy 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep you warm, all via your spare USB port.

    Stealth Phone Bombs

The guy over at GizChina found this gem buzzing around netizen tech blogs this past weekend. It’s the F-117 Smartphone and it bares a striking resemblance to the US military’s F-117 Stealth Fighter…but this phone won’t fly in under the radar and frag your friends iPhones. So why buy it? We don’t know either. But if it had wings I’d be more inclined.

i9000 Mini Makes An Appearance (Video!)

It seems that the iPhone 4 and HTC’s aren’t the only phones with a fan base here in the Gadgets Republic. Samsung has begun to make it’s mark as well, and that kind of popularity comes with certain…terms. One of those of course being that a knockoff must be made. Introducing the i9000 mini, a 3.5″ knockoff of Samsung’s original i9000. With a capacitive touchscreen, a 5.0 mega-pixel camera, Android 2.1, and seemingly decent hardware, it wouldn’t be a bad piece of hardware to pick up. That is of course if when released the price is just as mini.
