The Chinese company BYD, best known for its automobile manufacturing, will be the first to release their own Tablet PC abroad. Many have heard about the Shanzhai iPad clones that have made their way on to the market in China. For months many of the these products have been making their way in to the Western markets, through drop shippers and companies such as Lightinthebox and Dealextreme. This marks the beginning of a push by Chinese tech companies to enter Western markets directly.

Most of the media has been busy following more established Chinese tech companies like Huawei and ZTE. This has given BYD time to sneak in more or less undected. At the P&T EXPO COMM China 2010 BYD demonstrated its tablet PC products for the first time. It is similar to the iPad in a few ways, such as the 8.9″ touchscreen, one of its most important differences is its price. BYD’s new tablet is priced at only $299 which is affordable compared to its competitors.

This isn’t the first launch of computer products BYD has made. Early in March of this year BYD unveiled several of its notebooks at CeBIT 2010.

Sources say that the product is scheduled for March of next year, when an expected 10 million units will be exported. At the EXPO it’s been reported that Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese customers expressed interest in the product .Unfortunately the company hasn’t released information on the specs which doesn’t help us make any judgments as to whether it’s even worth the relatively small price tag.
