Sina Weibo iPhone App Now Available In English!

The most recent update of Sina Weibo’s iPhone app gives users the option English interface. Sina has clearly caught on that their site has the potential to become an international hit, with American celebrities like Tom Cruise signing up. Many foreign Twitter users, including yours truly, are now considering a full switch from Twitter to Weibo.

I used my friends iPhone to check the update, and found that many English speaking users have been posting about a full on switch from Twitter to Weibo. The simple fact that you don’t have to use a VPN to connect to Weibo is alone enough to sway some users. Include all the advantages Weibo has over Twitter, with instant messaging, as well as direct photo, video, and audio posting, it’s no wonder many are considering the switch.

As one friend writes:

New Weibo iPhone interface is in English! Goodbye, twitter

With this update I wonder if Jack Dorsey, Co-Founder and Chariman of Twitter, should even bother with his rumored planned visit to China in the coming months. I’m afraid Twitter is doing too little too late to have any chance of breaking in to the Chinese Market. Unfortunately no update has yet been released for Android that adds this English interface, but I’m sure one is not far off. When it does arrive, I’ll most likely be making the switch for my personal account along with everyone else.

  10. Hey Greg, great article. I just downloaded the iphone app and found that only some of the interface is in English :(

Thanks! I’ve found that everything except for the “Discovery” section in the app is in Chinese. It also doesn’t translate all of the posts that are in Chinese, but you should be able to simple copy and paste them in to Google Translate. Do you enjoy using Weibo otherwise?
