These days big brother always has an eye on you. Whether it be via security cameras in the subway or at your local super market, someone is always watching. The Beijing Government has decided to take it even one step further. They plan to implement a program to monitor the movements of the 17 million cellphone users in Beijing by tracking the signal of their mobile devices. What’s next? GPS Tracking implants under the skin?

China’s Ministry of Truth’s Latest Directives – WikiLeaks and Japan

China’s Ministry of Censorship Truth has released it’s latest “directives” pertaining to topics in the media and on the internet. These directives are issued to the media and/or to internet companies by various central (and sometimes local) government authorities, and are eventually leaked. This weeks directives include the infamous WikiLeaks, as well as “anti-japan” rhetoric.

What’s Trending in China?

With social networking beginning to boom in China, trending topics are gaining more and more attention each day. One of the funniest trending topics in China this last week was bread (面包 miànbāo), although in this case I’m not sure it’s a kind of loaf you’d want to eat.

Shanghai Police Crackdown on Shanzhai Sex Drugs

Turns out that Shanzhai isn’t tech exclusive in China, and the Police in Shanghai are cracking down. It seems that there’s massive counterfeit market for sex drugs such as Viagra. In November 2008, illegal Chinese-made sex pills made headlines when ten men in Singapore died rather gruesome deaths after taking them. For the two years following, Shanghai authorities have struggled to reign in the counterfeit Viagra market but have been held back by a bureaucratic loophole.

Hacked iTunes Accounts Available on China’s Most Popular Online Retailer

It’s been reported, and I’ve just confirmed, that hacked US iTunes accounts are being sold on TaoBao.com. The worst part is that these hacked accounts come with (possibly your) full credit card information. Apple’s really dropped the ball on this one…

More Shanzhai Fighter Jets?

It seems that there’s a new development in China’s never ending plight to clone everything they set their eyes on. If you look closely at they’re newly “developed” Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter you’ll notice that the inspiration comes from the American F-22 Raptor stealth fighter. Unlike the Shenyang J-15 Flying Sharkthe copy of the Russion Sukhoi SU-33 — the J-20 is larger and therefore most likely less agile than it’s genuine counterpart. I just hope, for the pilot’s sake, that they aren’t cutting costs on their Shanzhai weaponry doesn’t as they do with their tablets and smartphones.

Chinese Take Shanzhai To New Heights…Literally

I’m not sure if I’ve ever said this before, but to be completely honest I really do love some of the Shanzhai products that hit the market. I appreciate what the reverse-engineers and manufacturers are trying to do — even if they fail more often than not — but these latest knockoffs are just ridiculous. FIGHTER JETS….WTF!?

Hello Kitty…Video Camera

We’ve seen some pretty great Shanzhai stuff make their way out of Shenzhen’s factories, but this is definitely one of the best worst so far. As you can see it’s Hello Kitty Video Camera, and it would have gone great with my Hello Kitty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backpack in elementary school. I mean we love Hello Kitty, but really!? This time they’ve gone too far!

Shanzhai Gadget Teaches Your Toddler How to Text, Blackberry Style

The Chinese came up with one of the world’s original teaching tools thousands of years ago (i.e. writing), and now they’ve come up with a slightly more modern one. This gadget may look like Blackberry, but it’s in fact a simple water toy like the ones popular in the 80′s. It’s the perfect tool for getting your toddlers used to texting. Good idea to get them started young, as it’ll probably be the only form of communication they’ll be using once they hit age 12.
